Hydration - more than skin deep

Danielle and Amanda of DnA Elements give us their essential winter skincare tips. No dryness, dullness or flakiness to be seen here.

With the cooler weather now definitely upon us, it’s time to talk about adjusting your daily skincare regime to keep your skin hydrated throughout the winter months. Dry, dehydrated skin is the number one precursor to developing wrinkles, fine lines and loss of elasticity and no matter how many of the latest skin fad products you slap on – from peptides to stem cells – it really is the skin’s core hydration level that is the key to fostering a healthy complexion.

So how do we boost our skin’s hydration levels?

To keep your skin glowing and hydrated in the cooler months you need a combination of internal and external care and diet, which plays a huge part in moisturising your body from the inside out. Adding foods high in essential fatty acids (EFAs), particularly omega-3 (avocado and salmon) and omega-6 (nuts and flaxseed oil), can improve your skin tone and texture by keeping skin cells lubricated. EFAs are the building blocks for the wall of every cell in your body and growing evidence suggests that they play a vital part in the skin’s moisture content and health, thereby contributing to an overall rejuvenated appearance.

And I know you’ve heard it over and over again, but drinking water is more important than ever during winter not only to keep you hydrated internally, but also to allow your body to perform many of its functions at optimum levels, including the health of your skin.

Externally, the answer to skin hydration really is in the quality of your skincare products and the ultimate boost of delicious goodness lies in serums; the skincare specialists that hydrate, nourish and boost the texture and appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Serums and elixirs are specifically designed using a unique combination of oils to deeply penetrate the skin’s pores and deliver their unique combination of vitamins, fatty acids and antioxidants to the deepest dermal layers, where they are able to work from the inside out. Unlike moisturisers, serums are rapidly absorbed across the skin’s surface and contain only a few highly concentrated active ingredients to provide ultimate nutrition and more visible results in less time. Their intensive and deep-layer action leaves a non-greasy finish resulting in velvety, smooth hydrated skin. But don’t forget the rest of the essential skincare must-haves. A simple, effective skincare regime should include the following to adequately top up the daily water content being lost.

1. Start with a GENTLE FACE CLEANSER that won’t strip your face of oils. Choose one that has a built-in moisturiser such as jojoba oil, as this will help prevent your skin from drying out. The right cleanser should leave your skin feeling smooth and silky, not dry and tight.

2. While your skin is still damp, APPLY YOUR SERUM OR ELIXIR. Serums and elixirs easily penetrate the skin and deliver added nutrients to deeper layers of your skin that a moisturiser is not able to reach. They really are like a big glass of water for your skin!

3. Make sure you TEAM YOUR SERUM WITH A MOISTURISER for ultimate hydration and to give your skin’s protection barrier an added boost. Applying your elixir and moisturiser while your skin is still damp locks in moisture, leaving your skin hydrated for hours.

4. Lastly, TRY USING A FACIAL MIST like rose water if you feel your skin needs a pick-me-up throughout the day.

This simple daily regime will help with the climate changes our skin endures as we move through internal and external spaces, from heating to harsh winds and freezing temperatures.

So with a well-balanced diet, plenty of water and a few carefully selected skincare products, obtaining and maintaining healthy, glowing, hydrated skin is just as possible to achieve in winter as it is in the warmer summer months.
