Shop Neutral Prahran Market
The 'green' heart of the Prahran Market
Shop Neutral sells products that are kind to people, and the planet. Stuff made in Victoria gets extra brownie points. And anything toxic or over-packaged is just plain face-palmed.
The Back to Basics range of cleaning products they supply, very proudly, is a prime example. Developed more than 15 years ago, the range was created after the owner fell seriously ill and decided to remove anything toxic from her home, and cleaning products. As it turns out, these products were better for her, and the environment.
“Green products are kind to you and the planet,” says Shop Neutral shop assistant Claire Black. “They don’t have the harmful phosphates and chlorine bleach that end up in our creeks and rivers, and cause much damage to our marine life.”
The Shop Neutral team is always keen to give advice on clean alternatives to, well, cleaning. When it comes to the oven, Black says mix some of the Back to Basics Multi-purpose Liquid with a little bicarbonate soda to cut through grime.
“Here at Shop Neutral we always go back to find out how our grandparents would have done the job. Martha Gardener and Barbara Lord have some great tips in their books. Feel free to pop in and check [them out].”
Another option is to mix one cup of water with half a cup of cloudy ammonia in an ovenproof dish. Place the dish in the middle shelf of a warm oven for 10 to 15 minutes, or overnight for dirtier jobs! Wipe off the burnt-on grime from the oven, shelving and glass door with bicarbonate soda and a scourer.
“We have some great SAFIX coconut fibre scrub pads available in store, which are perfect for getting into tight corners,” says Black. “It’s really not too bad. Let the warm oven help do some of the work!”
The Back to Basics dishwashing liquid is extremely popular with customers, and does a great job keeping the dishes clean naturally. Water bottles, bath salts and Shop Neutral’s 100% recycled toilet paper are the next bestsellers.
There’s also a little bit of enviro-monkey see, enviro-money do. As we’ve now all learned to take our reusable bags shopping, Shop Neutral customers are developing further “healthy habits” bringing containers back to refill their cleaning products in store.
Black explains it’s all part of their nourishing philosophy, “Be kind to yourself and extending that kindness to the rest of the world will come naturally.”
She’s kind to herself with a much-loved coffee from Market Lane in Prahran Market.
