Healthy hair with service and results
Natasha spoke to Mark Di Iorio about his south-side and north-side salons taking hair to the 'healthy-side'. At Organika, service, results, the experience and your health are top priority.
NM: When did the first Organika salon open and what was the driving passion? Do you have a vision to open another Organika salon in the future?
MDI: Orgnaika Elwood first opened in May 2009. Carlton followed in May 2012. Having been in the industry for 15 years beforehand, I really wanted to embrace fusing the techniques and styles I had learnt but with my own personal interests and beliefs in living a healthier lifestyle. I experienced watery eyes and coughing lungs throughout my entire career and that motivated me to find an alternative that still works.
NM: What makes Organika stand out?
MDI: Organika is about two things. One, is the full salon experience from basin to chair. That means absolute service and results. Two, is about our values towards health. We are leading the way with the latest industry products that are much more health conscious but still manage to give class leading results.
NM: How would you convince someone to choose a salon with organic products over conventional?
MDI: The statistics and studies don’t lie. Things like colours, shampoo, conditioner, and styling products contain lots of nasties, some that can cause cancer. For some, it might have no effect. For others, it’s proven to have had dire consequences. Why take the risk when there are alternatives. That’s especially true for people at higher risk or sensitivities like pregnant women.
NM: What’s your top tip for home hair care between cuts?
MDI: Products. It’s so tempting to spend hundreds of dollars at the hairdresser and then head off to the local supermarket to purchase sub standard products. Having the right shampoo and conditioner can protect your hair, not only from becoming dry and weak, but can also keep colours lasting longer which means less trips to the hairdresser and less money too!
NM: Is there a favourite style cut/colour which clients are asking for at the moment?
MDI: The Mod bob – Lara Bingle has been sporting this look for the last few months. For colour, soft pastel colours are making a huge impression here and overseas.
NM: What is your one top nourishing tip for our nourished Melburnians?
MDI: 100% organic coconut oil. It’s a hot topic in salon at the moment. Use it as cooking oil, add into smoothies or salads as a non saturated fat alternative. Tastes great too.
NM: Best coffee in Melbourne?
MDI: The cold-drip coffee at Campos Coffee on Elgin Street in Carlton
NM: Favourite breakfast/brunch in Melbourne?
MDI: L'atelier by Monsieur Truffe on Lygon Street in East Brunswick.
