Brighton Schoolhouse has a healthy menu that rivals Melbourne's best cafes.
There are a number of (cleverly) named meals such as the 'I have quinoa for breakfast' and #YOLO (YOLO an acronym for 'You Only Live Once'). You can't go past the Prana Chai made with almond milk to warm up your insides, their super list of fresh juices and smoothies designed by Nutrition Darling, together with the fantastic range of raw superfood slices, also designed by Nutrition Darling.
Their salads are wonderfully nutritious and give you the option to keep vegetarian or vegan, or to add your choice of protein. On our last trip we enjoyed the balsamic baby beets salad (pictured) which includes heirloom beetroot, beetroot chips, pumpkin, green beans, spinach, pumpkin seed, crispy shallots, balsamic dressing and goats cheese. We added chicken breast as our protein source. This quickly became a really satisfying, healthy salad that didn't leave us hungry.
Elise Grauer, Naturopath and Owner of Bodhi Wellness had a closer look at this meal for us.
"This is a winning combination of colourful antioxidant-rich veggies including beetroot, pumpkin and spinach. The added protein from the chicken will ensure you’re feeling satisfied and not succumb to any sugar cravings come 3pm!
Spinach was Popeye’s favourite food for good reason Not only does it contain great amounts of iron, which increases energy and restores vitality, it has the added benefit of being one of the most alkaline foods helping to regulate the body’s pH.
Beetroot is a nutrient powerhouse packed with B vitamins, potassium, iron, vitamin A and C plus a range of other antioxidants. Beets also contain dietary nitrates which have been shown to improve blood flow throughout the body including the brain, heart and muscles. These natural nitrates increase nitric oxide in the body, which opens up blood vessels allowing more oxygen to flow whilst at the same time lowering blood pressure.
In addition to a healthy dose of vitamin A from betacarotene, pumpkin provides great source of phytochemicals such as lutein and zeaxanthin which promote and protects eye health.
A deliciously energising combination of healthful ingredients makes this a truly nourishing lunchtime option."
